San Diego Zoo

August 19, Saturday, PST

The plan was to get up today and head for the San Diego Zoo at 9a today.  We were on the road at 9:20a, and got to the zoo at about 10a or so.

As we were getting ready to go into the zoo, we got a text from Ed’s sister Monica (who lives in San Diego).  She was wondering what were doing after the zoo and if we wanted to get together with her later.  I suggested dinner, and she was agreeable.  Yay!  Another family member we get to meet.  She would meet us outside the zoo at 6p.

The zoo was amazing.  You really need a few days to see everything.  But we got to see so many animals.  While the map was helpful, the signage in the park was very confusing.  Not very good at all.  And a few times, we found that some of the benches and railings in the park were covered with ants.  (Ask us how we know)  We had a few times wee were brushing all of us off from the ants crawling on us.

At lunchtime, we brought our cooler into the park, but the ham and turkey that C had packed for sandwiches were a little “tangy”.  So, C and I ate salami sandwiches, and the girls had a few pizza slices.  Then we continued on.

Nearing the end of the day, we decided to jump on the “Kangaroo Bus”.  The bus looped us around most of the park, which gave us a chance to sit and relax for a little bit.  We then hopped off to see the tigers (last on our list).

We walked through and then got to the end and it was about 5:30p.  A quick walk through the gift shop, and then we headed outside.  Monica showed up right on time.  After a few quick introductions, we were off.

We all piled into the truck and drove down to Old Town Sand Diego State Historic Park.  This is a collection of shops and restaurants which represent the “birthplace of California”.  It was CA’s first settlement.  They were mostly Mexican shops, but very fun to look through.

We put our name on the waiting list at the Old Town Mexican Cafe, one of Monica’s favorite places (and they have mole, which was fantastic.  Easily one of the best places we have eaten.

We headed out from dinner and walked back up the hill where we parked, and then drove Monika back to her car at the zoo, then we headed home ourselves.
